Adam Deacon Accuses BAFTA of Snubbing Him After Noel Clarke Allegations

Adam Deacon has publicly accused BAFTA of deliberately omitting him from a video montage celebrating Rising Star Award winners. This accusation follows Deacon's outspoken criticism of Noel Clarke in light of serious allegations against Clarke.

Deacon, who won the Rising Star Award in 2012, appeared alongside Clarke in Kidulthood and Adulthood. He has been vocal about the allegations of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and bullying leveled against Clarke, which surfaced in 2021. BAFTA subsequently suspended Clarke’s membership and withdrew his Outstanding Contribution to Cinema award.

Deacon has previously voiced his support for Clarke's accusers, stating he attempted to highlight Clarke's alleged behavior but was dismissed. He also claimed Clarke sabotaged his career, leading to a decline in his mental health.

So, I was right again. I was the only actor left out of the montage section of the @BAFTA Rising Star Award. I would love to know the reason behind this. What did I do wrong?

Because I exposed a sexual predator? If I hadn’t, more women would have been put in danger. The laws… pic.twitter.com/PTGwNI87Yk

The relationship between Deacon and Clarke soured after Deacon's spoof film Anuvahood. In 2015, Deacon was found guilty of harassment without violence for sending abusive messages to Clarke.

Following the recent BAFTA ceremony, Deacon took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his feelings about the alleged omission.

"So, I was right again. I was the only actor left out of the montage section of the BAFTA Rising Star Award," he wrote. "I would love to know the reason behind this. What did I do wrong?

"Because I exposed a sexual predator? If I hadn’t, more women would have been put in danger," he continued. "The laws around filming nudity scenes in the UK and US have now been changed. Positive action has been taken. But yet, I’m the bad person… All this because I exposed this nonsense. But yet I have been banished from the BAFTAs. Honestly, this industry is a joke. From now on, I’ll just do me."

Last year, Clarke lost a libel case against The Guardian after the newspaper published articles detailing claims from numerous women against him. The judge ruled that The Guardian successfully defended its stories based on truth and public interest, finding Clarke not to be a credible witness.

In January of the previous year, Clarke's attempt to strike out The Guardian's defense was rejected. In 2022, he dropped a defamation case against BAFTA.

Meanwhile, One Battle After Another dominated last night’s BAFTAs, winning six awards, including Best Film and Best Director. Robert Aramayo's win for Best Actor was considered a major upset, surpassing nominees like Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet. Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, while Wunmi Mosaku and Sean Penn won the supporting actor awards for Sinners and One Battle After Another, respectively.

NME has reached out to BAFTA for comment regarding Deacon’s claims.
