Anne Hathaway Sings Charli XCX-Penned Track 'Burial' for 'Mother Mary' Film
Anne Hathaway lends her vocals to 'Burial,' a synth-driven track written by Charli XCX for the upcoming A24 film Mother Mary. The song also features production from Jack Antonoff and George Daniel.

A24 has unveiled the first song from the highly anticipated Mother Mary film. The track, titled 'Burial,' features Anne Hathaway singing lyrics penned by none other than Charli XCX.
Arriving in cinemas on April 17, Mother Mary follows Hathaway as a pop star who abruptly halts her tour after a personal crisis. She then reconnects with a former friend and fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel, as she prepares for a comeback performance.
Written and directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the trailer was released in December, and now fans get a taste of the soundtrack with the release of 'Burial'.
The synth-driven track showcases Hathaway's vocal talents, as she sings: “I’ll kill you softly/ So sweetly, kindly/I’m mesmerising, it’s terrifying,” before the song builds into an energetic pre-chorus: “This black suit fits like a glove/ I was born to be the widow of love/Won’t lose myself to a touch.”
Adding to the song's pedigree, 'Burial' also boasts production credits from Bleachers’ frontman Jack Antonoff and The 1975’s George Daniel, who recently married Charli XCX.
This isn’t Hathaway's first foray into film soundtracks; she previously showcased her singing abilities in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables and the 2011 animated film, Rio.
For Charli XCX, her contribution to the Mother Mary soundtrack follows her work on the score for the recent Wuthering Heights film starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. She also released a companion album that NME praised as “delicious gothic pop”.
Since the release of her album ‘BRAT’ in 2024, the ‘365’ singer has also been focusing on her acting career—starring in her own mockumentary The Moment, taking on a role in Erupcja, and having a supporting role in 100 Nights Of Hero. She also played a comedic version of herself in the TV show Overcompensating, and was recently cast alongside Supergirl star Milly Alcock in a new horror film directed by Takasi Miike.
In addition to Mother Mary, Hathaway is set to appear on screen again later this spring, when she rejoins Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt for the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. Lady Gaga will also be joining the cast, having previously taken on roles in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, the Joker sequel, Folie à Deux, and more.
