Apple Music is introducing transparency tags to identify AI-generated music, artwork, and videos, marking a significant step towards addressing the rise of AI in the music industry.

Apple Music to Flag AI-Generated Music, Joining Industry Push for Transparency

Apple Music is set to implement new transparency tags, informing listeners when AI has been used in the creation of music. This move comes as the music industry grapples with the increasing presence of AI-generated content.

According to Music Business Worldwide, Apple has communicated with industry partners about these new tags, which will highlight whether AI was used in the music itself, the lyrics, the music video, or even the artwork.

Currently, labels and distributors can voluntarily flag AI-generated content. However, Apple suggests this will soon become mandatory for all new uploads. They describe the tags as a crucial step towards establishing industry best practices and policies.

Apple emphasized that these changes are driven by the evolving music landscape and a commitment to maintaining a fair environment for all creators.

The exact timeline for full implementation and the consequences for non-disclosure remain unclear.

This update follows a recent study indicating that 97% of people struggle to distinguish between real and AI-generated music. Concerns have also been raised about potential income loss for music professionals due to AI.

Other platforms are also taking action. Deezer reported that 28% of its uploaded content was AI-generated and demonetized 85% of those tracks using AI detection tools. Bandcamp has outright banned AI-created music.

Spotify has also been cracking down, removing 75 million tracks deemed “spammy” and targeting impersonators. This came after reports of AI-generated songs being uploaded to deceased musicians' profiles without authorization.

Leading British artists like Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, and Elton John have urged political action to protect creatives' work in the age of AI. The UK government has stated they are working to find the right balance.

Google recently integrated AI music generation into its Gemini assistant using the Lyria 3 model, developed with input from producers and musicians.

Last year, the AI 'band' The Velvet Sundown gained significant traction on Spotify, and a song with millions of streams was banned from Swedish charts due to its AI origins.
