Aqua Calls It Quits: Eurodance Icons End Chapter After Three Decades
Danish-Norwegian Eurodance band Aqua, famed for their 1997 hit "Barbie Girl," have announced their breakup after 30 years. The group's last performance was in November 2023, and their final album, Megalomania, dropped in 2011.
It's the end of an era for Eurodance fans as Aqua officially announces their disbandment. The Danish-Norwegian group, who skyrocketed to fame with their infectious hit "Barbie Girl" in 1997, shared the news, marking the close of a significant chapter in their musical journey. Their final performance took place at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival in India in November of last year, and their last studio album was Megalomania released in 2011.
The band released a statement saying:
> AQUA has been a huge part of our lives and together we have been able to experience more than we ever dared to dream of.

> We have travelled the world many times, met countless wonderful people, sung with millions of you and shared memories that we will carry with us forever.

> When you've been together for so long, you also know when it's time to take care of what you created together. For us, it feels right to stop here while the memories are strong and while the love for the music, history and for each other is still intact.

Formed in 1995 in Copenhagen, Aqua quickly gained international recognition with "Barbie Girl," the third single from their debut album Aquarium. The song's success wasn't without controversy; in 2000, Mattel filed a lawsuit against the band, claiming the song damaged the Barbie brand's reputation. The judge famously dismissed the lawsuit, advising, "The parties are advised to chill."

Following their sophomore album Aquarius in 2000, the group initially disbanded in 2001. However, they reunited in 2007, releasing a greatest hits album in 2009 and Megalomania a few years later. After another split and subsequent reunion, their iconic hit experienced a resurgence in 2023 when Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled "Barbie Girl" for the Barbie movie soundtrack. This led to the song re-entering the UK Top 40 after 25 years, proving the enduring appeal of Aqua's catchy brand of Eurodance.
