Ariana Grande has officially released “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the lead single from her forthcoming album, Petal. The track is a collaboration with her longtime producer Ilya, alongside Max Martin.

The song is a buoyant reflection on a past relationship, exploring the complexities of unrequited feelings. "Hate that I made you love me," Grande sings, her voice layered over a shimmering, ambient soundscape. "Sorry if I made me your type/ Yeah, I hate that I made you love me/ ‘Cause I barely tried.”

The official music video for “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” directed by Christian Breslauer, is set to premiere on Monday, June 1 at 8 a.m. PST.

Details surrounding Petal have been scarce, but we do know that Grande and Ilya served as executive producers and co-writers. Before the album announcement, Grande playfully mentioned needing “an extra brain and four more arms” to manage another album release. She has since described the upcoming record as “a little feral.”

“It was kind of about breaking up with all different kinds of negative attachments — whether it’s my own monsters in my own head, external voices, things that no longer serve me,” she said. “It was a writing experiment for me to use that as a template so that I could be talking about one thing and sharing something, and people could use it however they want and apply it to their own lives.”

Last week, Grande commemorated the 10th anniversary of her album Dangerous Woman by releasing “Knew Better Part Two,” a fan-favorite track that didn't make the original cut. Her previous album, Eternal Sunshine, dropped in 2024 via Republic Records. She also stars in the film adaptation of Wicked, playing Glinda the Good Witch, a role she has long dreamed of.

The pop star’s schedule remains packed. Grande will launch the Eternal Sunshine Tour in Oakland on June 6, with Petal arriving on July 31 via BabyDoll/Republic Records. This November, she will appear in Focker In-Law alongside Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro, and in 2027, Grande is slated to star in the West End revival of Sunday in the Park With George, playing Dot alongside Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey.
