Authenticity Reigns: Music Fans Crave Real Moments Over Scripted Shows, Study Finds
A new study reveals that music fans prioritize authenticity and unscripted moments when connecting with artists, with live performances being key to engagement.

A staggering 90% of music fans believe that “authenticity” is the most crucial factor in forging a connection with an artist, according to recent research. The study, conducted by Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky in partnership with COLORSxSTUDIOS, surveyed 9,000 fans across nine countries.
The findings also highlight the importance of spontaneity, with 84% of music lovers valuing “unexpected” and “unscripted” moments as the foundation of lasting memories. Live performances are considered the most powerful way to engage with musicians, according to 60% of respondents. The study further suggests a positive impact of authentic performances, with one in three fans reporting feeling inspired to be themselves when witnessing genuine artistry.
However, the craving for authenticity arrives at a time when 40% of fans feel that gigs are becoming “overly scripted.” Affordability is also a growing concern, with one in three fans stating they can no longer afford to see their favorite artists perform live.
The debate surrounding phone use at concerts continues to be a hot topic. Several artists have taken a firm stance against it.
Jack White, Bob Dylan, Placebo, and Ghost have all implemented phone bans at their shows. Ghost's frontman, Tobias Forge, has argued that phones hinder audience engagement. Last year, Sabrina Carpenter also expressed interest in a similar policy.
On the other side of the debate, Billie Eilish recently defended fans' use of phones at concerts. Speaking with NME, Eilish stated, “I just think that’s what it’s like. My generation, and the generations below, we love to film stuff. All I do is film and take pictures of stuff – all of the time.”
Eilish added, “When I was young and would go to concerts or festivals, I would film every single minute of it – and then I would watch every single video that I took over and over until I even had the audio of the crowd memorised. I think that’s not to be pooh-poohed. An important part of the culture is that we are all on our goddamn phones! It keeps us connected. It does!”
