Banksy Unmasked? Reuters Claims to Identify Elusive Street Artist

For years, the art world has buzzed with speculation about the true identity of the elusive street artist Banksy. Theories have swirled, often pointing to Robert Del Naja, co-founder of Massive Attack, or a man named Robin Gunningham. Banksy's connection to Bristol, the hometown of Massive Attack, only fueled these rumors.

But the anonymity has been central to Banksy's mystique and appeal. Now, that might be changing. Reuters has published a lengthy exposé claiming to reveal Banksy's identity "beyond dispute." Their conclusion echoes a 2008 report by The Mail On Sunday: Banksy is Robin Gunningham.

To uncover Banksy's identity, Reuters meticulously examined previously unreported business records, travel documents, and eyewitness accounts, focusing particularly on Banksy's recent activities in Ukraine.

Reuters explained their pursuit of Banksy's identity, stating that the public has a legitimate interest in understanding the identity and career of someone with such profound influence on culture, the art industry, and international political discourse. They argue that Banksy's anonymity, a deliberate and profitable feature of his work, has allowed him to operate without the scrutiny that should be applied to those who seek to shape social and political discourse.

As an example, Reuters cites a Banksy stencil on the wall of London’s Royal Courts Of Justice depicting a judge using a gavel to beat a protester. The piece appeared shortly after the British government controversially declared the protest group Palestine Action a terrorist organization. Reuters notes the courthouse is a historically protected building, implying Banksy should be held accountable for such statements.

Robert Del Naja's name surfaces repeatedly in the Reuters report, noting his presence in Ukraine concurrently with Banksy. The Del Naja rumors gained traction when Goldie, the veteran drum 'n' bass producer, seemingly confirmed them in a 2017 podcast interview, accidentally referring to Banksy as "Rob."

Ultimately, Reuters concludes that Banksy is Robin Gunningham. Following The Mail On Sunday's 2008 report, Gunningham "seemingly went off the grid," according to Reuters. The publication discovered that Gunningham legally changed his name to "David Jones" to travel undetected and entered Ukraine on the same day as Del Naja. While Banksy and his associates have not confirmed Reuters' findings, this report may finally bring an end to the speculation.
