The legendary Mike D, a foundational force behind the iconic Beastie Boys, is making a resounding return to the music scene. Following a flurry of activity this spring – from surprise appearances with his children's band to the release of solo singles "Switch Up" and "What We Got" – the veteran artist has finally unveiled the details of his much-anticipated debut solo album.
Titled Thank You, the album will be released under his new moniker, Mike D 5D. This marks his first full-length project since the Beastie Boys' 2011 swansong, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, though his creative spirit has remained active through collaborations with acts like Cassius (alongside Cat Power) and Public Enemy (with Ad-Rock and Run-DMC), as well as producing for the band now known as Soft Play.
Accompanying the album announcement, Mike D has shared a third new track, "True Colors." This latest offering pulses with a psychedelic, live-band energy, evoking a vibrant fusion reminiscent of The Chemical Brothers' "Let Forever Be," but grounded by a deep, infectious funk breakbeat. The track builds to a surprisingly gentle and beautiful coda, showcasing a nuanced evolution in his sound.
