BTS Honors Korean History with 'ARIRANG' Album Trailer

BTS is diving deep into their roots with their new album, ARIRANG. The group just released a compelling animated trailer that draws parallels between their modern global impact and a historical event from over a century ago.

The trailer, released Thursday, March 12th, begins with an important message: "This video was inspired by the story of seven young Koreans as documented in The Washington Post on May 8, 1896 ('Seven Koreans at Howard'), some of whom captured the first known audio recordings of Koreans in Washington, D.C."

It continues, "As a modern reimagining, this work draws upon the profound cultural significance of these historical records, which preserve the authentic voices of young Korean men and the first-ever recording of ‘Arirang,'" while also noting that the visual narrative "may deviate from actual historical events."

The video depicts seven men sailing to the United States, their voices raised in joyful song for an audience gathered at Howard University. The timeline then jumps forward 117 years to 2013, showcasing BTS performing for massive crowds. This juxtaposition highlights how BTS's rise to international fame mirrors the achievements of those seven Korean men in 1896, amplifying K-pop's presence in the U.S. The music shifts from a reflective piano piece to an upbeat EDM track, potentially offering a sneak peek into ARIRANG.

The trailer concludes with the poignant message: "Every story begins with a song. When the world feels heavy, when your heart feels light, what is your love song?"

This teaser arrives a week before ARIRANG's scheduled release on March 20th. The band also revealed the album's artwork, featuring members RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook in sophisticated suits, exuding a sense of determination.

Since announcing ARIRANG in January, BTS has emphasized their intention to honor their heritage with this album. As the press release stated, "Arirang" is a traditional Korean folk song associated with "emotions of connection, distance and reunion."

The album is described as "a deeply reflective body of work" that explores BTS’s "identity and roots."
