Bulgaria's Dara Snags Surprise Victory at Eurovision 2026 Amidst Controversy

Bulgaria emerged as the unexpected victor at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, with Dara and her electrifying track “Bangaranga” claiming the top spot at the 70th annual competition.

This triumph marks Bulgaria’s inaugural Eurovision win since joining the contest in 2005. The nation had been absent from the previous three Eurovision Song Contests and only made its return in 2026 following several countries' decisions to opt out due to Israel’s inclusion.

Prior to the finals, “Bangaranga” wasn't considered a frontrunner, nor was it featured in Rolling Stone’s list of five most likely winners. However, Dara’s energetic anthem, which she describes as embodying “a special energy that everyone has got in themselves, a feeling that everything is possible,” resonated with voters and earned her the coveted Crystal Microphone.

According to the Guardian, “Bangaranga” draws inspiration from “kukeri – an ancient Bulgarian ritual where men roam through villages dressed in furry costumes with bells and animal masks.”

For the second year running, and despite the controversies surrounding their participation, Israel secured second place with Noam Bittan’s “Michelle.” Romania’s Alexandra Căpitănescu and “Choke Me” took third, while Australia’s Delta Goodrem and “Eclipse” finished fourth. Italy, previously highlighted by Rolling Stone as a potential winner, rounded out the top five with Sal da Vinci’s “Per Sempre Si.” The United Kingdom finished last among the 25 finalists.

With this victory, Bulgaria is set to host the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. The winning country traditionally hosts the following year’s event, as exemplified by Vienna hosting the 2026 Eurovision after Austria’s win last year with JJ’s “Wasted Love.”
