Camila Cabello Speaks Out on Cuba's Humanitarian Crisis

Camila Cabello is leveraging her influence to bring attention to the dire situation in her home country of Cuba.

In a recent Instagram post, the former Fifth Harmony member shared poignant images from her childhood in Cuba, juxtaposed with current photos depicting the struggles of Cuban citizens protesting the government's policies. She wrote, “There is so much going on here at home and so much I can say about the heartbreaking things the immigrant community is experiencing here in the US... I also feel a personal responsibility to speak about what’s happening in Cuba, I still have family on the island that we speak to and send medicine, food and clothes to.”

Cabello emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “It has been 67 years of a failing dictatorship and an oppressive regime. The Cuban people are suffering in an echo chamber where no one can hear them because to speak is to risk your life. Many people are starving, looking for food in trash heaps, and the only way to survive is having relatives ship you boxes of medicine because not even the hospitals have medicine.”

She further described the hardships faced by Cubans, including frequent power outages that lead to food spoilage and water scarcity. She also highlighted the government's suppression of peaceful protests, with protesters, even as young as 13, facing imprisonment or disappearance.

"This is a reality where a post online costs you your life,” she added. “The Cuban people have lived without dignity and without hope for too long. It’s no wonder so many Cubans have thrown themselves into shark infested waters, making boats out of tires and sticks and risking their lives for freedom.”

Cabello concluded her message by encouraging her followers to support Caritas Cuba, a Catholic humanitarian organization dedicated to providing assistance to those in need.

Cuba's political landscape underwent a significant transformation in 1959 with Fidel Castro's rise to power following the Cuban Revolution. He was later succeeded by his brother, Raúl Castro, and subsequently by the current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel in 2018. However, Raúl Castro remains an influential figure, holding a seat in the National Assembly and the title of Army General.

Cabello's connection to Cuba is deeply rooted, having lived there until the age of seven before relocating to Miami with her mother.

“I didn’t speak any English,” she told Grazia in 2021. “My parents brought me here for the same reason that a lot of migrant families immigrate, which is just there’s opportunities that aren’t available in the country where you live, or violence. My parents were looking for a better life for me.”
