Claire Mooney Makes History as Triple J's First Female Music Director
Claire Mooney has been appointed as the new music director at triple j, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold the position in the Australian broadcaster's 50-year history.

Claire Mooney is making waves in the Australian music scene as the newly appointed music director at triple j. This marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female to take on the role in the broadcaster's 50-year history.
Mooney's promotion places her at the forefront of the country's music landscape. Triple J plays a pivotal role in connecting music enthusiasts with emerging talent and promoting domestic artists.
She follows in the footsteps of esteemed predecessors such as the late Arnold Frolows, Richard Kingsmill, and Nick Findlay, who now serves as triple j's manager of music programming.
Mooney's journey with triple j began in 2017 as the Australian music producer at Unearthed. She steadily climbed the ranks, taking on roles such as group music programmer & producer. In 2021, she became the assistant music director, and last year, she transitioned to the music director position at Unearthed, continuing to champion new local talent.
"What a privilege it is to step into this new era of triple j as our first female music director," Mooney stated. "I feel so honored and excited to continue the legacy that’s been built by my mentors. We are so lucky to have a station like triple j exist in this country: one that authentically celebrates music, art and culture, and reflects and soundtracks the lives of young people around the country."
She added, "I’d like to think there is no place more obsessed with Australian music, and I can’t wait to help shape, support and champion the next generation of artists, alongside our passionate, hard-working triple j team and every listener who comes along for the ride."
Mooney's appointment follows triple j's first-ever open job search for the role. It was announced shortly after the network's Hottest 100 countdown, which garnered over two million votes.
Earlier in the year, triple j celebrated its milestone anniversary with the inaugural Hottest 100 of Australian Songs, amassing more than 2.655 million votes.
"Claire lives and breathes new music and has an incredible passion for breaking Australian talent, which we saw time and time again in her recent role as music director during her tenure at Unearthed," commented triple j’s Nick Findlay.
Findlay added, "As triple j’s new music director, she will lead the music that soundtracks the lives of young people in Australia well into the future."
