Coachella's Rise: From Desert Eden to Economic Bellwether, a Billboard Deep Dive

Billboard's 'On the Record' podcast dissects Coachella's evolution, exploring its cultural impact, financial dynamics, and the challenges facing independent festivals.

Coachella's Rise: From Desert Eden to Economic Bellwether, a Billboard Deep Dive

When Coachella first emerged in 1999, the American music festival landscape was vastly different. While touring festivals like Lollapalooza and Warped Tour existed, the scene was relatively sparse. The disastrous Woodstock ’99, marred by tragedy, had also cast a shadow over large-scale festival attempts.

Katie Bain, Billboard's senior music correspondent and author of Desert Dreams: The Music, Style and Allure of Coachella, emphasizes the unique atmosphere from the beginning. "It was like this Eden, ostensibly, of palm trees and grass and bougainvillea in the desert…Talking to some [attendees] who were there, they said that from that first year, it felt as special as it still feels. It was different from the start."

In the latest Billboard's On the Record podcast episode, Bain discusses Coachella's journey from a local favorite to a global phenomenon with host Kristin Robinson. The conversation covers iconic performances from Beyoncé to Daft Punk, the prevalence of payment plans (60% of GA ticket buyers used them last year), and the inherent "gamble" in booking the lineup.

Last year, Billboard reported that 60% of GA Coachella attendees used payment plans, sparking debate. Bain clarifies, "It’s a really smart way for people who don’t necessarily have $600 to spend in a given moment to make payments... It costs $41 to do the payment plan... It’s actually a pretty good deal."

Festivals offer significant value, like "going to a great buffet."

The 2010s were the peak for music festivals, with numerous niche events emerging. Post-pandemic, independent festivals face greater challenges due to talent competition and thin margins. Live Nation and AEG's dominance makes it harder for independent promoters.

Radius clauses, restricting artists from performing within a certain distance of a festival for a specified period, further complicate matters. Coachella's radius clause, known for its strictness, protects the event's value.

Coachella's radius clause, reportedly from Dec. 15 to May 1, significantly impacts artists, especially emerging ones reliant on touring income. They must weigh the benefits of playing Coachella against potential touring revenue loss. While Coachella offers a major platform, it also presents a risk.
