Drake Dominates Canadian Charts & CRTC Updates Streaming Regulations
Drake shatters records on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 with his latest releases, while the CRTC increases contributions for streaming services to support Canadian content.

Drake's Iceman release has made a seismic impact on the Billboard Canadian charts, breaking multiple records and solidifying his status as a dominant force in his home country.
After dropping three albums this month – Iceman, Maid of Honour, and Habibti – the Toronto-born rapper is reaching unprecedented chart heights.
Notably, this occurred the same week he surpassed Michael Jackson's record for the most No. 1s in the U.S.

"Janice STFU" marks Drake's 14th No. 1 song on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, dated May 30. This achievement breaks a tie with Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift for the most chart-topping songs since the chart's inception in 2007.
This week, Drizzy claims all top nine spots on the Canadian Hot 100. While Taylor Swift still holds the record for most simultaneous entries in the top 10 (10 tracks), Drake broke another of her records by charting 17 songs in the top 20.
Moreover, Drake now boasts 51 tracks in the top five and 84 tracks in the top 10, further extending his personal records. He also commands 42 out of 100 positions on this week’s Canadian Hot 100, surpassing Morgan Wallen's previous record.
With 40 new entries and two re-entries, Drake sets a new benchmark for the most charting hits in a single week.
CRTC Increases Streaming Contributions
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is increasing base contributions for audiovisual streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
Platforms earning over $25 million in revenue will now be required to allocate 15% of their income to Canadian content funds—a significant increase from the 5% previously proposed.
Toronto
The CRTC aims to stabilize funding at over $2 billion to support Canadian and Indigenous content. The regulator's statement emphasizes that these measures will ensure Canadian stories continue to be told and accessible across the country.
These decisions are part of the implementation of the Online Streaming Act, designed to boost the discoverability of Canadian and Indigenous content. Streaming platforms will be required to enhance the visibility of diverse content, with specific details to be revealed later.
What does this mean for music streaming? According to a CRTC spokesperson, a decision on Canadian content for audio services is forthcoming. Any changes affecting music streaming services will be outlined in a public decision following that process.
Currently, CRTC regulations mandate that at least 35% of music played on commercial radio stations must be Canadian content (CanCon). This standard does not yet extend to music streaming services.
