Dreamgirls Returns to Broadway: Jennifer Hudson to Produce Highly Anticipated Revival

Get ready, Dreamgirls fans! The buzz is real: the classic musical is heading back to Broadway, and Jennifer Hudson, the EGOT-winning star, is on board as a producer. The exciting announcement was made on The Jennifer Hudson Show earlier this week.

"This fall, Dreamgirls is coming back to Broadway for the very first time since its open 45 years ago in 1981," she revealed. "Now, it’s being reimagined for a whole new generation, which I am so excited about. Now, I finally get to tell you that I am a producer on the team for the revival of this iconic musical! There’s going to be so much more to share in time, but I’ve been having so much fun working with this amazing team, and I cannot wait to share the incredible production this fall."

The reimagined revival will be under the direction and choreography of five-time Tony nominee Camille A. Brown, celebrated for her work on Hell’s Kitchen and Gypsy. Stay tuned to the musical’s official website for upcoming announcements on dates and casting details.

Dreamgirls originally captivated audiences at New York City’s Imperial Theatre, running from December 20, 1981, to August 11, 1985. The original cast featured Sheryl Lee Ralph as Deena Jones, Loretta Devine as Lorrell Robinson, and Jennifer Holiday as Effie Melody White. The production's impact led to a domestic tour in 1983 and subsequent revivals, including an international tour and a run at London’s West End Savoy Theatre with Amber Riley as White.

The musical garnered numerous accolades, including Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, Lighting Design, Best Choreography, and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. The original cast recording also won a Grammy for Best Cast Show Album in 1983, and Holiday received a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” In 2006, Hudson won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Effie in the film adaptation, alongside Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, and Eddie Murphy.
