A powerful voice is set to grace the stage once more. Duffy, the Grammy-winning Welsh singer, has announced her first live performance in 15 years, a significant milestone following her harrowing experience of being kidnapped, drugged, and held captive.
The 'Mercy' hitmaker has not performed a full concert since 2011, the year she stepped away from the public eye for reasons she bravely disclosed in 2020.
Taking to Instagram Stories on Friday, Duffy revealed plans for a balloted gig at a "secret intimate" venue in London on July 5. "I would love nothing more than for some of you to attend," she shared, expressing her excitement.
She added, "It’s only small capacity so we can only select a few, but really looking forward to it, I will sing some new songs."
While the exact location remains a mystery, fans eager to attend can sign up for a free ballot here. Applicants will be asked for their date of birth, location, and contact details, with winners slated to be notified via email on June 15.
In 2020, Duffy broke her silence, revealing the profound reason behind her prolonged absence from music: she had been "raped and drugged and held captive over some days," and her subsequent recovery was a lengthy, arduous process.
"You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain?" she reflected. "I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke."
Following this initial disclosure, she continued to speak out, powerfully describing rape as a "weapon of war" in a detailed account shared on her website. She also encouraged her fans to open up about their own struggles, emphasizing the "liberating" feeling she experienced after sharing her story.
That same year, Duffy also publicly criticized Netflix, deeming them "irresponsible" for what she saw as the "glamourising [of] the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape" in their film 365 Days.
Her compelling journey is set to be explored further in an upcoming Disney+ documentary. The film will trace Duffy's life from her Welsh upbringing to her meteoric rise to fame, and her subsequent withdrawal, featuring interviews with family, friends, and industry peers. Though announced in March, a release date is yet to be confirmed.
Duffy's career soared after signing a record deal in 2007, with her 2008 debut album Rockferry becoming the UK's best-selling record that year. She followed up with her second album, Endlessly, in 2010. Her return to music in 2020 saw the release of singles 'Something Beautiful' and 'River In The Sky'.
Last month, she shared a poignant photo of herself in a recording studio, accompanied by a message to her fans: "If only I could find the right words to explain how much I’ve missed you all. Working on coming back to you."
