Duffy, the Welsh singer who retreated from the public eye after being abducted, held captive for weeks, and raped, is set to share her account of this harrowing ordeal in a new Hulu Original documentary for Disney+.
Six years after initially opening up about the experience in a pair of notes published in 2020, she has partnered with Rare TV to tell her story on-camera for the first time. The title and air date are yet to be announced.
The documentary’s director, Gill Callan, stated in a press release, “Duffy’s life has been shaped by success and fame, but equally by pain, defiance, and an irrepressible sense of self. I’m drawn to the tension between vulnerability and confidence in her story and how a person can be deeply affected by their experiences, yet still find a powerful, expressive voice that is unmistakably hers.”
The film promises a retrospective look at Duffy’s life, from her Welsh upbringing to her rise on the world stage with her 2008 album Rockferry, featuring hit singles like “Mercy” and “Warwick Avenue.” Following her initial revelation about the kidnapping, she released her first new songs in half a decade, “River in the Sky” and “Something Beautiful,” in mid-2020. The documentary will include interviews with Duffy, archival footage, and conversations with family, friends, and peers from the music industry.
