Euphoria Season 3 Faces Backlash: Has the HBO Hit Gone Too Far?
The upcoming season of HBO's 'Euphoria' is generating controversy, with fans questioning the show's increasingly sexualized content and potential tonal shift.

Fans are expressing concerns about the direction of the upcoming third season of Euphoria, particularly regarding the portrayal of Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie. A recently released teaser trailer has sparked debate, depicting Cassie in what some perceive as highly sexualized and "humiliating" scenarios.
While the first season of the HBO show garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative approach to the teen drama genre, early reviews of the new season – which incorporates a five-year time jump – suggest a controversial emphasis on sex work, with storylines reportedly revolving around strip clubs, sugar babies, and OnlyFans.
The latest trailer, showing Sweeney dressed as a baby with pigtails and a pacifier, seemingly filming explicit content, has particularly shocked viewers. This follows earlier clips depicting her posing as a dog on a leash, further fueling criticism of what many see as the hyper-sexualization of Sweeney's character. It's worth noting that Sweeney herself had previously requested that show creator Sam Levison cut unnecessary nude scenes from season two.
Reactions on social media have been strong, with many users expressing discomfort and concern. Some argue that the show's direction is insensitive given the current social and political climate, while others suggest that Cassie's arc is intended as a "cautionary tale."

It’s a fine line. Is the show catering to those urges, or is it exposing how broken a person has to be to act that way? Cassie seems more like a cautionary tale of deep-seated insecurity

The shift in tone has led some to draw comparisons to the Grand Theft Auto video game series, particularly due to the introduction of a Western influence that sees Zendaya's character, Rue, traversing the desert and becoming involved in arms dealing.
Zendaya as Rue in Euphoria
Adding to the uncertainty surrounding the show's future, Zendaya recently suggested that this season may be the last. She expressed pride in her work on the show, stating, "Rue taught me so much about life. That crew has also seen me grow up. I owe so much to that show. Rue taught me so much about empathy and redemption. I’m very grateful for all of it."
In related news, Labrinth, the show's lead composer, recently voiced his dissatisfaction with the music industry and Euphoria itself, declaring he is "done" with it all. He later clarified his departure by stating he would not "let people treat me like shit."
The season is set to premiere on Sunday (April 12) on HBO Max (and Sky Atlantic/NOW in the UK). A special screening is also scheduled for the same day at Coachella.
