FKA Twigs Sues Indie Band The Twigs Over Trademark Dispute
FKA Twigs has filed a lawsuit against the band The Twigs, alleging trademark infringement and an attempt to leverage claims for a significant payout.

FKA Twigs, legally known as Tahliah Barnett, is taking legal action against The Twigs, an indie band fronted by twin sisters Laura Good and Linda Good. The lawsuit centers around a trademark dispute concerning Barnett's stage name, with Barnett claiming the duo issued multiple cease-and-desist letters.
According to court documents reviewed by Rolling Stone, Barnett asserts that The Twigs were aware of her use of the name FKA Twigs since 2013. During that time, they exchanged emails about the potential for confusion between her stage name and their band's name. Barnett reportedly offered the band $15,000 to allow both musical entities to "co-exist," without her needing to purchase the name. However, according to the documents, Laura and Linda declined, stating that they did not consent to this arrangement.

Barnett continued to build her career as FKA Twigs, while The Twigs seemingly faded from prominence, the document states. The filing highlights the disparity in their current reach: FKA Twigs boasts 3.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 300 million views on YouTube, whereas The Twigs have 67 subscribers and 19,332 views on YouTube, 705 followers on Instagram, and 25 monthly listeners on Spotify. This data serves to illustrate that the two operate in entirely different commercial spheres, making audience confusion "inconceivable."
The lawsuit alleges that in May 2024, The Twigs attempted to "weaponize these barred and unmeritorious trademark claims" by sending cease-and-desist letters to Barnett. These letters allegedly threatened litigation, including injunctions against Barnett's use of her mark, in an attempt to disrupt her decade-long, uninterrupted use of the FKA TWIGS mark for their own benefit.
Reportedly, The Twigs "have threatened to seek an injunction preventing Barnett from using her stage name, demanded a significant seven-figure payout to release any alleged claims against Barnett."
Representatives for FKA Twigs have declined to comment. The Twigs have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Barnett has requested a jury trial to resolve the dispute over the rights to use and register the FKA Twigs trademark.
