From Vanilla Ice to Political Fire: The Great American State Fair's Bizarre Lineup Sparks Debate
A 250th-anniversary celebration on the National Mall is raising eyebrows with its eclectic mix of performers and alleged political undertones.

While President Donald Trump tinkers with White House renovations, including a rumored octagonal cage for UFC fights, a massive celebration is planned for the United States' 250th birthday at the National Mall. This event, however, is already generating buzz for all the wrong reasons.
Freedom 250, the organization orchestrating the "Great American State Fair on National Mall," has unveiled a lineup that's leaving many scratching their heads. As Sonny Bunch, culture editor for The Bulwark, put it in an X post, “This is the worst lineup of musical acts I have ever seen.”
The current roster includes Martina McBride, Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice, Young MC, C+C Music Factory, Milli Vanilli, the Commodores, and Bret Michaels. The festivities in Washington, D.C., are scheduled from June 25 to July 10. It's anticipated that McBride might perform her controversial 1994 hit “Independence Day.”
Adding to the confusion, Morris Day and the Time, initially listed as performers, have publicly denied their involvement. In an Instagram post, the band stated, “Morris Day & the Time will not be performing at the ‘Great American State Fair.’”
Organizers are touting the event as a “once-in-a-generation celebration,” aiming to unite all 56 U.S. states and territories in a World’s Fair-style spectacle. According to the Freedom 250 website, it's "an opportunity for visitors from across America to experience an unforgettable celebration of the people and traditions that define our nation.”
Following his return to office, Trump established a task force to organize the anniversary, appointing himself as chair and Vice President J.D. Vance as vice chair.
