Netflix has unveiled the trailer for their upcoming documentary, The Rise Of The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel, which centers on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' founding guitarist, Hillel Slovak.

This deep dive into the band's history is set to premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas, on Friday, March 13th, before hitting the streaming platform on March 20th. The film promises an intimate look at Slovak's life and his pivotal role in shaping the band's sound during their formative years.

Slovak, who played on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' first three studio albums, tragically passed away in 1988 at the age of 26 due to a drug overdose. His untimely death led to John Frusciante stepping in as his replacement, marking a new chapter for the band.

Directed by Ben Feldman, the documentary features exclusive interviews with key members Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and Frusciante, along with insights from Slovak's close friends. It aims to capture the raw energy and creative spark that defined the band's early days.

Interestingly, the band members have distanced themselves from the creative process of the documentary. In a statement, they clarified their involvement:

"About a year ago, we were asked to be interviewed for a documentary about Hillel Slovak. He was a founding member of the group, a great guitarist, and friend. We agreed to be interviewed out of love and respect for Hillel and his memory."

They emphasized, "However, this documentary is now being advertised as a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary, which it is not. We had nothing to do with it creatively. We have yet to make a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary."

The band concluded, "The central subject of this current Netflix special is Hillel Slovak and we hope it sparks interest in his work."

In a previous interview with NME, the band reflected on Slovak's enduring influence, coinciding with what would have been his 60th birthday. Kiedis noted, "The energy of Hillel Slovak has never truly faded."

He added, "I wish Hillel hadn’t missed out on that first recording [self-titled debut ‘The Red Hot Chili Peppers’] in the first year... He was a creator of the band. That was his baby."

Since welcoming back Frusciante in 2019, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released two albums in 2022: Unlimited Love and Return Of The Dream Canteen.

More recently, Flea unveiled a jazz rendition of Frank Ocean's 'Thinkin Bout You', and Chad Smith made a surprise appearance as a substitute music teacher.
