Houston Hip-Hop Legend Michael '5000' Watts Passes Away at 52
Michael '5000' Watts, the influential Houston DJ, producer, and founder of Swishahouse Records, has died at the age of 52. His impact on Houston hip-hop and mixtape culture is immeasurable.

The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Michael "5000" Watts. The Houston DJ, producer, and founder of Swishahouse Records was hospitalized earlier this week. His family released a statement regarding his health issues. Another statement confirmed his passing due to a fatal heart rhythm called Torsades de pointes, leading to sudden cardiac death. He was 52.
"It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we inform the public of our beloved Michael '5000' Watts," the statement read.

Born in Houston, Michael "5000" Watts founded Swishahouse Records in 1997. He responded to the rise of chopped and screwed music in the Houston hip hop scene, pioneered by DJ Screw. The label became a launching pad for artists like Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, and Chamillionaire. The mainstream success of Jones' "Still Tippin'" led to a national distribution deal for Swishahouse with Asylum Records.
