Tonight marked Jack Black's fifth hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, while Jack White graced the stage for his sixth performance, including a past appearance with the White Stripes. The cleverly booked duo, self-proclaimed "Jack Gray," seized the opportunity, appearing in several sketches together.

Jonah Hill made a cameo during the monologue to welcome Black to the prestigious Five-Timers Club. The club room scene featured appearances from Tina Fey, Candice Bergen, and Melissa McCarthy, along with musical guest White. White jokingly excused himself to "move my hearse" before returning to deliver a blistering rendition of the White Stripes' iconic "Seven Nation Army," with Black providing enthusiastic vocals about hosting.

Black and White joined James Austin Johnson, Kenan Thompson, and Andrew Dismukes in a pre-taped music video for the comedic country ballad "Words To Live By." Black also embodied a disgruntled lunching employee, a karate instructor, a rejected Spartan warrior, and an overeager Airbnb Superhost.

In another memorable sketch, Black spontaneously harmonized on Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son" with fellow husbands, revealing hidden rock 'n' roll vests beneath their outfits.

White and his band – featuring drummer Patrick Keeler, keyboardist Bobby Emmett, and bassist Dominic Davis – delivered a dynamic performance of "Derecho Demonico," one of two surprise tracks released just days before the show. They followed up with "G.O.D. And The Broken Ribs," both songs already familiar to concertgoers.

The "Jack Gray" moniker originated in 2019 when Tenacious D hinted at a collaboration with White at his Third Man Records. While a reunion seemed unlikely after a fallout between Black and Kyle Gass, Black clarified that there were no immediate plans for Tenacious D to reunite.

Speaking on The Tonight Show, Black expressed reservations about the "Jack Gray" name, preferring alternatives like "Jack Silver" or "Jack Stripes". He also revealed that White had personally called to confirm his musical guest appearance.

It appears SNL strategically booked White to coincide with Black's hosting gig, potentially prompting the release of his new songs. While White isn't actively promoting a major project, he is scheduled to appear on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Black's current venture, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is now in theaters.
