John Dwyer Delivers Yet Another Masterpiece with Osees' Surprise LP, 'Off Course'
Prolific doesn't begin to describe John Dwyer. Just months into the year, the psychedelic garage-punk maestro has already unveiled new material from multiple projects. Now, his flagship band, Osees, drops a surprise full-length, Off Course,...

To call John Dwyer prolific feels like an understatement. The visionary behind countless sonic explorations consistently redefines the boundaries of psychedelic rock and garage punk. In the first half of this year alone, he’s already launched the intriguing new side project Heathen Axe, released a fresh album under his solo moniker Damaged Bug, and even dropped a surprise EP from his most renowned outfit, Osees. And just when you thought he might take a breath, a brand new Osees LP arrives.
Off Course, the latest offering from Osees, is out today and, despite its five-track count, Dwyer rightly dubs it an album. It’s a journey, a sprawling sonic expedition that feels both playful and profoundly hallucinatory. The record’s funky grooves and expansive soundscapes serve as a potent reminder of the profound influence Osees has had on contemporary psych-rock, particularly evident in bands like King Gizzard.
This album marks a deliberate return to an earlier, more spontaneous method of creation for Osees, as Dwyer himself explains:
> We went back to an older method of writing for this one.
> We jammed and jammed and jammed.
> I took the tapes home and ironed out some mutant tunes.
> We went back into the studio and burned them to tape live and then I took it home
> to Stu-Stu-Studio and did the vocals and brought in Tom Dolas & Brigid Dawson to put the finish on.
> Spice is always nice.
> Mixed it all up in the cauldron and thus we have a strange brew indeed
> Floating in the smoke we have:
> A couple long jams, a couple short jams and a finale that’ll dump a bucket of ear worms on you
> (reminiscent of “the axis”?)
> Dip your toe in organ rock and roll
> So without further ado
> We present to you
> “OFF COURSE”
> An album wondering where the fuck are we and how did we get here
> A signal dispatched out into the darkness
> We are here
> We are alive
> And we are together
> CHEERS NO EARS
> JPD/DG/OSEES
This collaborative, jam-driven approach, refined by Dwyer and enhanced by the talents of Tom Dolas and Brigid Dawson, has yielded a truly unique listening experience. Off Course is a vibrant, unpredictable ride through the band’s ever-evolving sound.
