Kim Petras Seeks Independence, Claims Republic Records Holding 'Detour' Hostage
Pop sensation Kim Petras has taken to social media to express her frustration with Republic Records, alleging the label is delaying the release of her highly anticipated album, 'Detour,' and hindering her creative control.

Kim Petras is signaling a desire to return to her independent roots, citing creative and financial frustrations with her current label, Republic Records. In a series of candid posts on X, the singer claimed her upcoming album, Detour, has been shelved for months.
"My album has been done for 6 months but my record label has refused to give me a release date or pay my collaborator’s for the work they’ve done," Petras wrote. She further expressed her desire to regain control over her career, stating, "I’m tired of having no control over my own life or career. I want to continue to self fund and self curate my own music. This is why I have formally requested to be dropped by @RepublicRecords."
As of now, Republic Records has not responded to requests for comment.
Petras elaborated on the situation, revealing that the label's alleged obstruction extends beyond the album itself. "I also filmed and self funded a music video over 2 months ago for my next single that they also wouldn’t give me a release date for," she shared, highlighting the extensive effort put into the project with "9 looks 6 setups 13 pairs of shoes."
Her latest single, "I Like Ur Look," was released in October, following "Freak It" and "Polo." Her most recent full-length LP, Problématique, dropped in 2023. It was her first major release after the global smash "Unholy," her Grammy-winning collaboration with Sam Smith. Petras lamented, "I won a grammy 2 years ago........ the music is TEA. Still no support. If it’s not a tiktok trend or 80s revival queerbaiting shit these labels have no interest in supporting."
Despite the challenges, Petras remains committed to her fans. "My fans have waited long enough. I love u guys," she concluded, hinting at a potential independent release: "I’m dropping Detour regardless."
