Kylie Minogue Reveals Secret Second Cancer Battle in New Documentary
Kylie Minogue shares her private struggle with a second cancer diagnosis in a new Netflix documentary, emphasizing the importance of regular checkups and the healing power of music.

In a revealing three-part documentary, Kylie, premiering today (May 20) on Netflix, Australian icon Kylie Minogue discloses her second battle with cancer. A routine checkup in 2021 led to this diagnosis, following her initial treatment for breast cancer in 2005.
"My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself,” Minogue, 57, shares in the film, according to the BBC. “Not like the first time. Thankfully, I got through it, again, and all is well. Hey, who knows what’s around the corner, but pop music nurtures me… my passion for music is greater than ever."
Minogue admits struggling to find the right moment to discuss her diagnosis, which occurred before the global phenomenon of her Grammy-winning 2023 hit, “Padam Padam.” She explains, “I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person. I didn’t want to leave the house again at one point. ‘Padam Padam’ opened so many doors for me but on the inside I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life. And I really just wanted to say what happened so I can let go of it. I’d sit through interviews and every opportunity I thought, ‘now’s the time’, but I kept it to myself.”
While keeping her diagnosis private from the media and fans, Minogue subtly embedded Easter eggs within her 2023 Tension album. The track “Story” includes the poignant lines, “I had a secret that I kept to myself/ Turn another page, baby take the stage,” signifying her need to mark that period in her life.
Now, Minogue shares her story with the hope that “someone out there who will benefit from a gentle reminder to do their checkups.”
Following her initial diagnosis in 2005, Minogue had to halt her Showgirl tour and withdraw from a headline slot at Glastonbury to undergo a lumpectomy and chemotherapy. In a trailer for the documentary, she reflects, “I felt removed from my body … I was so scared of what was ahead of me,” against a backdrop of news headlines covering her first cancer battle.
Minogue was declared cancer-free in February 2006 and has since been lauded for her efforts in raising awareness about breast cancer. The WHO reports that over 2.3 million women were diagnosed with the disease in 2022, resulting in 670,000 deaths worldwide. The increased screening rates following Minogue's initial announcement, particularly in Australia, became known as the “Kylie effect.”
