MAGA Remix: Trump Administration Co-opts Drake's 'Iceman' Release for Political Post
The Trump administration sparked controversy by using Drake's 'Iceman' album art to promote a MAGA agenda on social media, following a pattern of appropriating pop culture moments for political messaging.
The White House has once again dipped its toes into the pop culture pool, this time stirring the pot with a social media post that co-opts Drake's latest release, Iceman. Amidst pressing issues like the Iran war and inflation, the administration took a moment to put a MAGA spin on the rapper's album art.
On the official White House account, they shared an image spoofing the Iceman cover. The parody features a diamond-encrusted glove holding a chain with "MAGA" in place of the original design. The caption? A simple, declarative "ICED OUT."
This isn't the first time the Trump administration has attempted to latch onto current trends to promote their agenda. These attempts have often been met with disapproval from the artists involved. Last year, Sabrina Carpenter voiced her outrage after her clips were used to promote ICE. "This video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda," she stated.
Similarly, the Department of Homeland Security faced backlash for using Olivia Rodrigo's song "All-American Bitch" in a video showcasing ICE raids and arrests. Rodrigo responded on Instagram, condemning the use of her music to promote "racist, hateful propaganda."
As of now, Drake, a Canadian native (a fact that aligns with Trump's past musings about adding Canada as the “51st state”), has not commented on the White House's post.
Adding another layer to the story, when asked about the Kendrick Lamar-Drake feud, Trump confessed his ignorance, stating, "I don’t know" when asked who won the rap battle.
