The official trailer for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, dropped, promising a comprehensive look at the King of Pop’s journey from humble beginnings to global stardom.

"You’re confident. You’re strong. You’re beautiful. You’re the greatest of all time,” says Jaafar Jackson—MJ’s real-life nephew—in a Stuart Smalley-esque pep talk. Director Antoine Fuqua ( Stans, Bullet Train) then transitions from Jackson’s pre-solo career to his stadium-filling peak, with Jaafar capturing the iconic dance moves and vocal nuances.

Fuqua then rewinds to the beginning, with family patriarch Joe Jackson (Colman Domingo) laying down the law for his musically gifted family in Gary, Indiana. “Let me tell you somethin’,” Joe says as MJ’s 1979 hit “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” plays, showing the Jackson Five honing their act. “In this life, you’re either a winner or a loser. Y’all want to work in a steel mill like me for the rest of your days?”

The children affirm their willingness to “fight for it.” The trailer then cuts to producer Quincy Jones (Kendrick Sampson) asking a young Michael if he’s ready to record. “You know what I’m after,” Michael asks his manager, John Branca (Miles Teller), who responds, “You wanna be the biggest star in the world?”

As Jackson’s solo career explodes and he wins a record eight Grammy Awards in 1984, Joe Jackson attempts to capitalize on his son’s success with an international tour.

The trailer hints at the power dynamics between father and son, with Joe dictating Michael’s priorities regarding the Jacksons’ 1985 Victory tour. The preview concludes with Jackson struggling to translate his musical ideas onto tape, foreshadowing the creation of Thriller, the album that would solidify his status as a global icon.

The $155 million film, two years in the making, is slated for release on April 24. The cast includes Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Larenz Tate as Motown founder Berry Gordy, Laura Harrier as Jackson 5 dresser Suzanne de Passe, Kat Graham as Diana Ross, Jessica Sula as La Toya Jackson, Liv Symone as Gladys Knight and Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark.
