Michael Jackson's Music Sales Surge After Controversial Biopic Release
Despite negative reviews, the Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' has triggered a massive resurgence in his music catalog, with streaming numbers skyrocketing and classic albums re-entering the charts.
Despite overwhelmingly negative reviews and controversy surrounding its handling of child sexual abuse allegations, the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has become a box office success, igniting a significant surge in interest in his music.
According to Billboard, Jackson's solo work achieved a career-best 137.5 million on-demand streams in the U.S. during April 24-30, a 146% increase. Song clicks also hit 55.9 million, surpassing the previous high of 53.7 million during Halloween week 2019, driven by "Thriller."
The renewed interest extends beyond his solo career. Music from his time with the Jackson 5 (and later the Jacksons) saw a 135% increase in streams, reaching 10.1 million, and a 57% rise in clicks, totaling 4.9 million.

As a result, Thriller has climbed to Number Seven on the Billboard 200. His hits compilation Number Ones is at Number 13, the Michael soundtrack at Number 37, and The Essential Michael Jackson at Number 158. "Billie Jean" has also re-entered the Hot 100 singles chart at Number 38.
This resurgence is a major win for the Jackson estate, who navigated a challenging production, including legal restrictions preventing the portrayal of child abuse allegations by accuser Jordan Chandler. This led to extensive reshoots and a delayed release.
With Michael projected to gross over $1 billion globally and ending with "The Story Continues," a sequel seems likely. This could lead to a revival of later tracks like "Black or White," "Remember the Time," "Will You Be There," and "Scream." Janet Jackson, who was absent from the first film at her own request, might even appear.
