My Chemical Romance Teases Fans with Cryptic 'Phantom' Message: Is New Music on the Horizon?

My Chemical Romance (MCR) has sent the internet into a frenzy after posting a cryptic message on social media, leaving fans to decode its meaning. The post, shared on the band's Instagram account and guitarist Frank Iero’s page, simply reads: "A GAME YOU WILL PLAY".

Alongside the caption is a short clip featuring the word "PHANTOM" flickering in neon green letters. The video contains no music or sound, adding to the enigma.

The post comes as the band is set to play their first show of 2026 in Lima, Peru, after having to cancel their Bogota tour opener. Adding to the intrigue, this post doesn't seem related to their current 'The Black Parade' tour, nor does it align with the tour's aesthetic.

MCR fans have been eagerly awaiting new music, with their last release being the single ‘The Foundations Of Decay’ in 2022, their first new material in eight years.

Here’s a glimpse of fan reactions:

The band’s last studio album was 2010’s ‘Danger Days’. Although they entered recording sessions for a fifth album in 2011, it never materialized, and the band separated in 2013.

Since their reunion announcement in 2019, there have been teases that have excited fans. In 2023, rumors of a new album were debunked after a cryptic post from a band associate. Last September, fans thought they had picked up on clues about new music from an on-stage prop clock ticking down to December 12, but that date passed without news.

NME spoke to Iero in 2025 about new MCR music. “No, sorry,” he said. “When that stuff – if that stuff were to happen, we will tell you. We will tell you in the way we want to tell you.”

Their current tour arrives in the UK with a show at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium on June 30, before a date in Glasgow and shows at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 8, 10 and 11. The tour includes support from Echo & The Bunnymen, Interpol, Joan Jett, Skunk Anansie, Sunny Day Real Estate and Mogwai.
