Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts are set to make their highly anticipated return to the concert stage this September 26, headlining Farm Aid at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach. This marks their first live appearance since a benefit last fall, following the cancellation of their planned European tour this summer.
Young will share the bill with his fellow Farm Aid board members: co-founder Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Margo Price, and Nathaniel Rateliff.
The impressive lineup also features Turnpike Troubadours, Lukas Nelson, Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Jesse Welles, Sierra Ferrell, Mon Rovîa, I’m With Her, Amythyst Kiah, Lily Meola, and Chris Pierce. Tickets for the event go on sale September 26.
Willie Nelson, a co-founder of Farm Aid, emphasized the festival's crucial mission. “Family farmers grow our food and strengthen our communities. And when farmers struggle like they are now, communities feel it too,” Nelson stated. “The challenges farmers face threaten their livelihoods and put all of us at risk. We’re bringing Farm Aid to Virginia to stand with the farmers and fishers who feed Hampton Roads and beyond — and to grow a food system that works for everyone.”
The inaugural Farm Aid took place on September 22, 1985, at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. That legendary event boasted a star-studded roster including Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, Bon Jovi, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Roy Orbison, and Eddie Van Halen with Sammy Hagar.
Since its inception, Farm Aid has been held almost every year, consistently drawing top musical talent to support American farmers. Last year’s benefit at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis featured every board member, alongside artists like Kenny Chesney and Billy Strings.
At that previous show, Young and The Chrome Hearts delivered a powerful set, performing classics like “Big Crime,” “Rockin’ in the Free World,” “Long Walk Home,” “Be the Rain,” “Southern Man,” “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black),” and “Old Man.”
Many of these tracks are featured on their recent live album, As Times Explodes. Fans can also anticipate new material from Neil Young later this year, with his new studio album, Second Song, expected soon.
