Neptunes in Turmoil: Chad Hugo Sues Pharrell Williams Over Alleged Financial Misdeeds
Pharrell Williams is facing a lawsuit from his longtime friend and Neptunes partner, Chad Hugo, alleging financial impropriety and withheld royalties. The suit claims Williams cut Hugo out of their company and owes him potentially million...

The creative partnership between Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, known as The Neptunes, has been one of the most influential forces in modern music. From producing chart-toppers for Nelly ("Hot in Herre") and Snoop Dogg ("Drop It Like It’s Hot") to crafting hits for Gwen Stefani ("Hollaback Girl") and Justin Timberlake ("Rock Your Body"), their signature sound has defined an era. Together, they also formed two-thirds of the band N.E.R.D., achieving further success.
However, a new lawsuit threatens to unravel this legacy. Filed on Friday, January 23rd, Hugo accuses Williams, a childhood friend from Virginia, of a series of legal wrongdoings.
According to Brent J. Lehman, Hugo’s attorney from Munck Wilson Mandala, Williams is accused of "self-dealing, concealed material information, and… diverted revenues owed to plaintiff." The lawsuit further alleges “willful, fraudulent, and malicious conduct” warranting punitive damages.
This isn't the first legal skirmish between the two. In 2024, Hugo initiated legal action concerning the trademark rights to The Neptunes name, accusing Williams of seeking sole control. That case is still pending.
This new lawsuit significantly escalates the conflict. Hugo alleges withheld royalties and a refusal to provide financial documents, hindering Hugo's ability to ascertain the full extent of his dues. His legal team claims potential damages from the 2017 N.E.R.D. album, No One Ever Really Dies, could reach $1 million alone.
Lehman states that Hugo hasn't received his rightful share of royalties from The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. album sales, released music, touring income, and merchandising deals.
As of yet, a representative for Pharrell has not issued a statement regarding the allegations.
Despite the brewing conflict, The Neptunes continued to collaborate between 2020 and 2022, producing tracks for artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Rosalía, and A$AP Ferg. In fact, shortly before their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022, Hugo told Billboard that he was in the studio with Pharrell.
However, Hugo's legal team claims that starting in 2021, repeated requests for financial records, monthly statements, and royalty statements were largely ignored, with only "limited" and "incomplete" documents provided.
Hugo's lawyers emphasize that Williams' failure to provide these records constitutes a breach of their operating agreement, depriving Hugo of the transparency needed to evaluate buyout proposals, confirm distribution calculations, and assess revenues.
The trademark dispute filed in March 2024 further fueled the tension. Hugo alleged that Pharrell's company was improperly attempting to unilaterally register trademarks for The Neptunes name, violating their partnership agreement.
While Pharrell's representatives initially downplayed the trademark dispute, Pharrell confirmed in a September 2024 interview that he and Hugo were no longer in contact, stating, "I love him, and I always wish him the absolute best, and I’m very grateful for our time together."
The new lawsuit alleges that the financial dispute has intensified, with Hugo's legal team claiming a complete absence of revenue from an N.E.R.D. merchandising partnership since September 2023. They estimate owed funds from No One Ever to be between $325,000 and $575,000, with potential damages exceeding $750,000 to $1 million.
Hugo's lawyers state that, as recently as last month, Pharrell's attorneys promised to produce financial documents but ultimately failed to do so.
The lawsuit formally accuses Williams of breaching his fiduciary duty, seeks a full accounting of royalties for both The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., and requests a declaratory judgment clarifying their rights under the operating agreement.
Lehman, Hugo's attorney, stated, "After years of obfuscation by Pharrell and his team, Mr. Hugo had no choice but to seek substantial compensation and accountability in court. We look forward to presenting the evidence and obtaining the full relief the law provides."
