Ozzy Osbourne to Resurrect as Interactive Hologram: A Digital Afterlife?
The late Ozzy Osbourne is set to be immortalized as an interactive hologram, developed by HYPERREAL. This digital avatar promises fans a unique experience, but raises questions about legacy and technology.
Holograms have been touted as the future for years, and now, the late Ozzy Osbourne is the latest celebrity to be given a digital afterlife. Sharon Osbourne and Jack Osbourne recently revealed their partnership with HYPERREAL at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. The goal? To create a hologram avatar using "the digital DNA of Ozzy Osbourne, voice, image [and] movement." According to Billboard, this life-sized, interactive Ozzy will debut in the US and UK later this summer. It's a fascinating, if slightly unsettling, prospect.
"It's kind of scary how it's really very accurate," Jack Osbourne stated, according to License Global magazine. "He will exist digitally as himself for as long as we have computers. Technology has come such a long way to where it's almost drag and drop. You could shoot a template for a commercial... literally prompt what you want Digital Ozzy to do in that commercial and you just drop it in. It's that simple now."
This AI-generated hologram aims for genuine interaction. "You can ask Ozzy anything, and he will answer you in his own voice, and the answers will be what Ozzy would have said," Sharon Osbourne explained. "We're going to take it all around the world. People can talk to him and he will talk back." While it's positioned as a tribute to Ozzy's legacy, the concept raises some eyebrows. Is it a fitting homage, or a potentially exploitative venture?
HYPERREAL has prior experience in crafting celebrity avatars, having worked with figures like Paul McCartney, Notorious B.I.G., Lionel Messi, and Stan Lee. Billie Eilish also utilized hologram technology for her recent concert film, Hit Me Hard And Soft, collaborating with Proto Hologram. Though visually impressive, Eilish's hologram wasn't interactive, unlike the planned Ozzy avatar.
