Paul McCartney Reflects on Childhood, The Beatles' Spirit, and Previews New Single 'Salesman Saint'
Paul McCartney previews 'Salesman Saint' from his upcoming album The Boys of Dungeon Lane and delves into his childhood influences in a revealing podcast interview.

Paul McCartney recently sat down with Tom Holland on The Rest Is History podcast for an expansive conversation. The discussion spanned from his first song at 14 after his mother's death to the impact of wartime resilience on the Beatles.
McCartney offered a sneak peek of his new track “Salesman Saint” from his forthcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, slated for release on May 29. The excerpt, starting around the 8:17 mark, features Macca reminiscing with lyrics like, “My father was a salesman/ My mother was a saint/ Working every God given minute to make enough to pay the rent/The way was nearly over/The peace would soon begin.”
After sharing the snippet, McCartney discussed his mother’s bravery as a midwife. "She got called to go to a birth...and so she got on her bike in this deep snow...and I have this memory, in the street lights, of her cycling out through the snow and thinking, wow, that’s pretty brave."
He also recounted writing his first song at 14 after his mother’s passing. “I remember the things that appealed to me about that song...my mum had died not too long before that...the guitar was your therapist.”
McCartney explored how growing up in Liverpool shaped him and the Beatles. “I do think the character of Liverpool is a very strong one...My dad played the piano at home. There were a lot of jokes...they kept their heads above water by laughing at the whole thing...that was something that found its way into the Beatles,” he said. “I think it gave us a good sense of humor.”
The Boys of Dungeon Lane, produced by Andrew Watt, revisits McCartney's early years, including a song about his friendship with John Lennon titled “Home to Us” (also featuring Ringo Starr). He previously released “Days We Left Behind,” which, like the album, draws from his childhood memories, even inspiring the album's title.
