Defying expectations and delivering a moment for the ages, pop phenomenon Olivia Rodrigo surprised fans at Primavera Sound Barcelona last night by bringing out none other than Robert Smith, the iconic frontman of The Cure. The duo premiered their first original collaboration, a captivating new track titled “What’s Wrong With Me,” sending ripples of excitement through the festival grounds and beyond.
Rodrigo, visibly elated, shared her enthusiasm with the massive crowd before the performance. “This song is special to me for so many reasons, but primarily because it’s my first song I’ve ever done a feature on, which is really exciting,” she exclaimed. “I can’t believe that this song exists with the person it exists with, and I’m just so fucking over the moon.”
This isn't the first time the two artists have shared a stage, though it marks their inaugural official duet. Rodrigo has long been vocal about her admiration for Smith, previously hailing him as a “personal hero.” Fans will recall her bringing Smith out at Glastonbury last year, where they delighted audiences with renditions of The Cure classics “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m In Love.” Rodrigo's upcoming album also features a subtle nod to “Just Like Heaven” in the lead single “Drop Dead,” further cementing her reverence for the goth-rock legend.
The Cure themselves graced the Primavera Sound stage this weekend, delivering a powerful set that included several live rarities. Their performance was particularly poignant, marking their first public appearance since the passing of their esteemed guitarist and keyboardist, Perry Bamonte, in December of last year.
Fans eagerly awaiting more from Rodrigo won't have to wait long. Her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, is slated for release on June 12. Following the album drop, Rodrigo is set to embark on an extensive world tour, which will kick off in September and continue through the spring of 2027.
