Pras Michel Gets a Reprieve: Fugees Rapper Granted Delay in Prison Surrender
Fugees rapper Pras Michel has been granted a two-month delay to appeal his bail status while fighting his conviction on money laundering and conspiracy charges. Here's the latest in the ongoing legal saga.

The legal saga surrounding Fugees rapper Pras Michel continues, with a recent ruling granting him a temporary reprieve. Pras had previously been denied his request to remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction and 14-year prison sentence related to money laundering, illegal lobbying, and witness tampering.
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, in her Thursday ruling, acknowledged the gravity of Michel's conviction on ten offenses over two years ago. She stated that his motion for bail pending appeal failed to meet the necessary burden to overcome the presumption of detention. However, in a small win for the musician, Judge Kollar-Kotelly agreed to postpone Michel's surrender date by two months, allowing him to appeal the bail issue at the federal circuit court level.
Originally slated to begin his prison sentence on January 27th, Michel, 53, now has until March 30th to report.
Michel's defense argued that a series of reversible errors tainted his conviction, citing instances where the district court improperly referred to him as a “co-conspirator” and an F.B.I. agent offered opinions on his guilt. The judge dismissed these claims, stating that the motion largely repeated arguments already extensively litigated.
Lawyers for Michel have yet to comment on the ruling. Judge Kollar-Kotelly emphasized that Michel must take swift action to pursue his appeal of the bail ruling with the D.C. Circuit, or further extensions will not be considered.
"This wasn’t a fair trial. This was a coronation of guilt,” Michel’s spokesperson Erica Dumas previously stated. “We’re confident the appeals court will recognize this case for what it is, an unprecedented trial that denies Pras’ constitutional right to an impartial jury.”
Federal prosecutors initially indicted Michel in 2019, accusing him of making illegal contributions to Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. The case expanded two years later to include charges of bank fraud, concealment of material facts, witness tampering, violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and acting as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China, as detailed in a Rolling Stone feature.
The charges stemmed from Michel’s relationship with Low Taek Jho, a Malaysian financier accused of stealing $4.5 billion from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Prosecutors allege that Michel facilitated the channeling of funds linked to 1MDB into a lobbying effort aimed at persuading the Trump administration to drop investigations involving Low and a Chinese dissident. Michel has consistently denied any wrongdoing. “What benefit would I get trying to break laws?” he told Rolling Stone. “It’s not worth it to me. I’m like a pariah now. I’ve got friends who won’t talk to me because they think there’s a satellite in orbit listening to them.”
Amidst the legal battles, Pras briefly reunited with the Fugees in 2023 but later distanced himself from further reunions with Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean.
