A federal judge has denied Fugees rapper Pras Michel's plea to avoid prison while he appeals his conviction on charges related to illegal foreign lobbying, which led to a 14-year prison sentence. However, the judge did grant a two-month delay before he must report to prison.
Michel, found guilty in 2023 of orchestrating a "foreign influence campaign," had argued that remaining free during the appeal process would expose significant issues with his original trial. He sought to challenge the verdict before commencing his prison term.
However, in a ruling issued on Thursday, January 22nd, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly expressed skepticism about the likelihood of Michel's arguments swaying the appeals court to overturn his conviction or sentence.
"This court has already opined that the issues raised by defendant do not warrant an acquittal or a new trial, particularly considering the overwhelming weight of the evidence against him," the judge stated. "Defendant’s reiteration of the same arguments do not change this Court’s mind."
Despite denying the request to stay out of prison, the judge agreed to postpone Michel's report date, allowing him time to seek a similar release on bail from the appeals court during his appeal. Originally slated to report next week, Pras now has until March 30th.
The Fugees, consisting of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Michel, achieved stardom in the 1990s with iconic tracks such as “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready or Not,” and “Fu-Gee-La.” After disbanding in 1998, each member pursued successful solo careers, with reunion attempts surfacing in recent years.
In 2019, Michel faced federal criminal charges, accused of funneling funds from Malaysian financier Jho Low, the central figure in the 1MDB embezzlement scandal, to influence the Trump administration. He was also implicated in channeling Low's money to Barack Obama's 2012 presidential campaign and attempting to sway an extradition case on behalf of China.
Following a trial in April 2023, which included testimonies from Leonardo DiCaprio and former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Michel was convicted on 10 counts, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government. He received a 14-year prison sentence and was ordered to forfeit $64 million allegedly connected to the illicit scheme.
