Primavera's Electric Surprise: Olivia Rodrigo and Robert Smith Ignite the Stage

A palpable buzz swept through Barcelona's Primavera Sound on Saturday as pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo made an unannounced appearance, electrifying the festival crowd. Just a day after The Cure's own headlining set, Rodrigo took to social media to tease her surprise performance, promising fans an unforgettable experience.

Her 11-song set was a vibrant showcase of her biggest hits, but the true highlight arrived with the debut of "What's Wrong With Me," a track from her highly anticipated album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

Addressing the captivated audience, Rodrigo shared the significance of the moment: "This song is special to me for many reasons, but primarily because this is my first song I’ve ever done a feature with somebody. I am just so proud of it and I’m so glad this song exists, I’m just so f***ing over the moon, so I thought I’d let you guys hear it."

The identity of her collaborator remained a tantalizing secret until after the first chorus, when Rodrigo enthusiastically announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Robert Smith."

The Cure's iconic frontman then took to the stage, delivering the song's second verse with his signature melancholic charm, before uniting with Rodrigo on the chorus, a moment that sent ripples of excitement through the festival grounds.

This isn't the first time the two artists have shared a stage. Smith previously joined Rodrigo during her headlining set at the 2025 Glastonbury festival, performing beloved The Cure classics like "Friday I’m in Love" and "Just Like Heaven." Their onstage chemistry has now seamlessly translated into the studio with this new collaboration.

The partnership on You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love feels organic, given Rodrigo's vocal admiration for The Cure's influence. Her new album openly references the band, from name-checking "Just Like Heaven" in her single "Drop Dead" to featuring a track simply titled "The Cure."

In an Apple Music interview, Rodrigo spoke fondly of their burgeoning friendship: "I played [Smith] a bunch of other songs on the album. I adore him and obviously have gotten a chance to kind of get to know him a little bit over the past year."

Smith himself hinted at their creative synergy in a British Vogue cover story about Rodrigo. "She calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion — and we have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together," he revealed. "I can’t wait to hear what she does next!" This latest performance confirms that their creative journey together is only just beginning.
