Punk Rock Meets the Pigskin: Green Day and Bad Bunny to Headline Super Bowl, Sparking MAGA Outrage

The Super Bowl is about to get a whole lot louder, and potentially a lot more political. With Green Day tapped to perform at the opening ceremony and Bad Bunny headlining the halftime show, the game is shaping up to be a cultural flashpoint.

The East Bay punk rockers, Green Day, have been selected as hometown heroes to kick off the championship's 60th anniversary celebration in Santa Clara, California. According to the NFL, the band will "usher generations of Super Bowl MVPs onto the field." While the setlist remains under wraps, Green Day is known for their politically charged performances.

Just recently, the band used their platform at the 2026 iHeartRadio ALTer Ego concert series to voice support for anti-ICE protestors in Minnesota and criticize the Trump administration. Before launching into "Holiday," Billie Joe Armstrong declared, "This song is anti-fascism. This song is anti-war. We stand up for our brothers and sisters in Minnesota."

Armstrong then added, with a sneer, "Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen Miller now has the floor," before the song's interlude. This anti-fascist stance is consistent with their recent performances.

Over the past few years, Green Day has led audiences in "Fuck Donald Trump" chants and altered the lyrics of "American Idiot" from "I’m not a part of the redneck agenda" to "I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda."

Green Day's performance will set the stage for Bad Bunny's highly anticipated halftime show, which has already drawn the ire of Trump supporters. Following the announcement of Bad Bunny as the headliner, the far-right has criticized his Spanish-language music and his stance against ICE. The conservative organization Turning Point USA even considered planning a competing halftime show.

Former President Trump commented on Bad Bunny's performance, stating, "I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s crazy, and then they blame it on some promoter that they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous." While Trump attended last year's Super Bowl, his presence this year remains uncertain. If he attends, his potential reaction to the performances will be something to watch.
