Remembering Bob Power: The Sound Architect Behind Hip-Hop and Neo-Soul Classics

The music world mourns the loss of Bob Power, the visionary engineer and producer whose sonic fingerprints are all over some of the most groundbreaking albums in hip-hop and neo-soul history. Power died on Sunday, March 1st, at the age of 73. A cause of death was not confirmed.

Born in Chicago in 1952, Power's journey began with a solid foundation in music theory, earning degrees from Webster College and Lone Mountain College. He honed his craft in California, composing for the Emmy-winning PBS show Over Easy and creating jingles for major brands.

In 1984, a pivotal moment arrived when he was invited to engineer a session for Stetsasonic at Calliope Studios. His innovative approach resonated deeply with the band, leading to his involvement in their breakthrough album, On Fire (1986). This marked the beginning of his significant impact on hip-hop.

Power became an integral part of the Native Tongues collective, collaborating with A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Black Sheep, and Jungle Brothers, shaping their distinctive sounds.

His engineering credits include landmark albums such as A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory, De La Soul’s De La Soul Is Dead, Erykah Badu’s Baduizm, and D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar. Power also lent his expertise to several Roots albums, including Do You Want More?!!!??! and Things Fall Apart. He received two Grammy nominations: Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for Meshell Ndegeocello’s Peace Beyond Passion, and Album of the Year for his work on India.Arie’s Acoustic Soul.

From 2006 until 2025, Power shared his knowledge and passion as a professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. "Bob’s nearly 20-year presence at CDI helped shape the principles and values of our wonderful Institute," said CDI chair Nicholas Sansano. "He embodied what we aspire to be as people and professionals...he was one of the most generous and caring people I had the great honor of calling a friend, a brother, and a teacher."

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from across the music industry. Questlove poignantly stated, “Bob was our training wheels for how to present music.” Maggie Rogers, a former student, remembered him as someone who “always made me feel so seen in my weird creative brain and always kept me searching.”
