Remembering DJ Dan: House Music Pioneer Passes Away at 57

The music world is in mourning following the death of DJ Dan, the celebrated West Coast house producer, at the age of 57. News of his passing was confirmed on Sunday, March 29th, by his representatives in a statement shared with Billboard. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

"It is with profound sorrow, deep admiration, and an enduring sense of gratitude and love that we announce the passing of Daniel Wherrett — known professionally to the world simply as DJ Dan," the statement read. He was lauded as "one of the most beloved, genre-defying, and genuinely influential pioneers in the history of American electronic music."

The statement continued, "He leaves behind not just a discography, but a culture — a way of feeling music that touched millions of souls across four decades and five continents. He often said he felt his purpose in life was ‘to heal through music.’"

DJ Dan was scheduled to perform at the Dead Ringer club in Nevada on Saturday, March 28th. However, the event was abruptly canceled, with ticket holders receiving refunds. Organizers cited DJ Dan's inability to attend in a brief Instagram statement.

His representatives described Wherrett as "a man who saw music in colours", adding that his live performances were a "vision translated into something audiences felt in their bodies long before they understood it with their minds".

Beyond his musical talent, DJ Dan was portrayed as a multifaceted individual. "Off the stage, he was a cook, a traveler, an obsessive record collector whose family bought him a new turntable every Christmas — not because it was tradition, but because it was the only gift he ever wanted," his representatives shared.

The impact of DJ Dan's music resonates deeply within the electronic music community. "He leaves behind his music, his label, his mixes, and the countless thousands of dancers who found themselves — truly found themselves — in the middle of one of his sets. The world is quieter today. But press play on anything he touched, and you will hear exactly why we mourn him, and exactly why we are forever grateful he was here to inspire us."

Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories of the late DJ.

I am not okay you guys. House music helped define an entire era of my life. DJ Dan was someone who shaped so many of my friends into the DJs they become. My girl Gina Starr, who was like family to him. And my dear friend Donald Glaude. 💔

I am very saddened by the death of @DJDanmusic, the first DJ I ever saw truly bring it.

Future Fest 2001 at the Colusa County Fairgrounds. Green lasers spelling out “DJ Dan” and bouncing it all over the circus tent.

I was forever hooked on electronica. https://t.co/D7ZvxUhciY pic.twitter.com/QQ6bHUYPpd

Born Daniel Wherrett in Washington, DJ Dan initially pursued design before relocating to California in the early ‘90s to dedicate himself to electronic music. He co-founded the Funky Tekno Tribe and became a vital figure in the West Coast underground electronica movement.

By 1998, he was recording 'Essential Mixes' for the BBC. In 2004, his track 'That Phone Track' topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. His earlier tracks, including 1999's 'Needle Damage', and 2001's 'That Zipper Track' and 'Put That Record Back On', also achieved chart success.
