SXSW "Devastated" by Austin Mass Shooting, Festival to Proceed with Heightened Security
SXSW organizers express grief and reaffirm commitment to safety after a mass shooting in Austin, Texas, just days before the festival's scheduled start.

Organizers of SXSW have expressed their devastation following a mass shooting in Austin, stating they are working closely with authorities to ensure safety ahead of the festival, scheduled for March 12-18.
The tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning, March 1, at a bar in Austin, resulting in three fatalities, including the shooter, and 14 injuries. Three individuals remain in critical condition, according to CNN.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that the gunman initiated the shooting from a vehicle outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden around 2 AM.
A SXSW spokesperson confirmed to Deadline that festival authorities are collaborating with law enforcement and safety agencies. The festival anticipates over 500,000 attendees.

In a statement, SXSW expressed deep sorrow: "We are devastated by the tragedy that occurred in Austin last night. This is our home and we care about it deeply. Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we’re grateful to first responders for their swift response."
The statement continued: "Year round, SXSW works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies to plan for a safe SXSW. We will continue to stay in close coordination with our public safety and city partners and will provide additional updates as they become available."
The FBI is also investigating potential links to terrorism, according to Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI San Antonio Division. "Obviously, it’s still way too early in the process to determine an exact motivation, but there were indicators on the subject and then his vehicle that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism."
Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated: "This act of violence will not define us, nor will it shake the resolve of Texans. To anyone who thinks about using the current conflict in the Middle East to threaten Texans or our critical infrastructure, understand this clearly: Texas will respond with decisive and overwhelming force to protect our state."
Last year saw the debut of SXSW in London, running from June 2-7 in Shoreditch. Headliners included Tems and Mabel, with appearances from Alice Glass, Heartworms, and L’objectif.
The London event featured live performances, conferences, and discussions with figures like Jane Goodall and Wyclef Jean.
