Teyana Taylor Reveals Comeback Album 'Escape Room' After Initial Retirement
Teyana Taylor discusses her decision to return to music with a new album in 2025, after initially stepping away in 2020, citing feeling unappreciated by the industry.

Teyana Taylor surprised fans with her return to music after initially walking away from the industry in 2020. In a recent TIME Women of the Year interview, she discussed her hiatus and the journey that led to her 2025 album, Escape Room.
Taylor openly shared her reasons for stepping back, emphasizing her desire to pursue ambitions beyond music, which ultimately led to her Golden Globe-winning performance in One Battle After Another. She also expressed feeling unappreciated within the music industry.
“Everybody told me it was dumb,” she said of the decision. “And I was like, ‘No, I am going to be a great actress. One day, I am going to be a great director.’”
After dedicating several years to screen projects, Taylor eventually returned to the studio, driven by a renewed sense of purpose and personal experiences to share through songwriting. “I had something to talk about,” she told TIME. “I had experienced love. I had experienced heartbreak. I had experienced healing.”
These personal changes included her divorce from Iman Shumpert in 2023, after eight years of marriage and two children, and a new romance with Aaron Pierre in 2025. Escape Room was released on August 22 and debuted at No. 67 on the Billboard 200. The album also earned a Grammy nomination for best R&B album.
Looking ahead, Taylor has ambitious goals. “I would love the EGOT,” Taylor told the publication. “And if I don’t get that Tony, guess what that T is gonna stand for? Teyana.”
