The Music World Mourns Talay Riley: A Songwriter's Tragic End

The music world is in mourning following the tragic death of acclaimed singer-songwriter Talay Riley, who was fatally stabbed in London. The artist, whose real name was Mark Orabiyi, was just 35 years old.

Police were called to a property in Silvertown, Newham, on a Friday morning after reports of a stabbing. Officers confirmed that Orabiyi died at the scene. A second man also sustained stab wounds and is recovering in hospital.

Three individuals were initially arrested on suspicion of murder. A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman have since been released without further action. A 27-year-old man has been released on bail as inquiries continue, according to reports from Sky News.

Talay Riley's family released a heartfelt statement, remembering him as “a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend. He brought love, light and joy to our family and to all who knew him.” They added, “We will always cherish his kindness, beautiful spirit and remarkable talent. His presence touched many lives, and his memory will remain in our hearts forever. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

His brother, artist Scribz Riley, shared his profound grief, stating his “heart is shattered.” He recalled a final conversation with his brother: “Just before he went to sleep we spoke about the future, staying positive and about everything we still had left to do. I never imagined that would be our last conversation.” Scribz described him as “a friend to many, a mentor, an inspiration, and a light in so many people’s lives,” emphasizing that he “loved deeply, gave freely, and touched countless people through his talent, kindness, and spirit.”

Talay Riley was a dual threat in the music industry. As a solo artist, he toured with major names such as Usher. His prolific songwriting career saw him collaborate with an impressive roster of global stars, including Britney Spears, Ellie Goulding, Zendaya, and Dua Lipa.

Tributes have poured in from fellow artists. Craig David, who worked with Riley on his 2018 album ‘The Time Is Now’, sent “so much love to you & the family,” remembering his “beautiful energy.”

Stormzy took to social media to express his sorrow, while Kehlani wrote, “big hugs scribz I’m so sorry.” Khalid shared a similar message, sending “so much love” to Riley’s family.

Longtime collaborator Chip expressed his profound sadness: “You ain’t deserve to go out like that fam. Fly high bro. your pen will live forever. What a day man. What a life. RIP Talay Riley. I’ll cherish the memories forever fam. Prayers and thoughts go out to your family.”

Record label Position Music described Riley as “an extraordinary songwriter, artist, and creative whose impact on music will be felt for generations.” They added that he “will be remembered for his creativity, passion, and the lasting impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to work with him.”

Rapper Wretch 32 commented on Scribz Riley's Instagram post, saying: “Sending love to you & your family bro. Your brother was a gem & will be missed & never forgotten, Never! RIP.” Sasha Keable also shared her condolences, writing: “Sending you so much love babe, he was such an inspiration for me and so many others. rest in paradise.” Sugababes' Keisha Buchanan added, “Sending my condolences and prayers.”

Riley's songwriting prowess is evident in numerous hit songs. He contributed to The Chainsmokers’ ‘Who Do You Love’, Khalid’s ‘Young Dumb & Broke’, Kehlani’s ‘Out The Window’, and FLO’s ‘Walk Like This’. He also co-wrote the H.E.R. track ‘Lights On’, featured on her 2017 Grammy Award-winning self-titled album. His legacy as a gifted artist and a cherished individual will undoubtedly endure.
