Wireless Festival Canceled After Kanye West Ban: UK Government Denies Entry Amid Controversy
London's Wireless Festival has been canceled after Kanye West was denied entry into the UK due to concerns over his past antisemitic remarks and embrace of Nazi imagery.
Last week, organizers of London's Wireless announced that Kanye West would headline all three nights of the festival, which was set to take place July 10-12 at London's Finsbury Park. Companies like Pepsi, Diageo, Rockstar Energy, and PayPal responded by removing their sponsorship of the event, but promoter Melvin Benn issued a statement standing by West and urging "forgiveness and giving people a second chance." It didn't work. The UK government has denied West entry to the country, and this year's Wireless is now canceled.
The announcement does not come as a surprise, and it's not the first festival to be canceled after booking West as a headliner. Last year, Slovakia's Rubicon Festival was canceled amid backlash after West was announced as headliner. British authorities had already signaled their alarm over the idea of allowing West into the country after his recent embrace of antisemitism and Nazi imagery and rhetoric. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told The Sun, "It is deeply concerning Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism." Now, the BBC reports that the UK's Home Office has officially denied West's application to travel to the country "on the grounds that his presence would not be conducive to the public good."
In January, Kanye West, who legally changed his name to YE, took out a full-page Wall Street Journal ad to apologize for Nazism and antisemitism, blaming his behavior on bipolar disorder and a previously undiagnosed brain injury from his famous 2002 car crash. Last month, he released his album BULLY, and he played two concerts at LA's SoFi Stadium last week. CNN reports that West made a statement earlier this morning, saying, "I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen. I know words aren’t enough – I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here."
Here's the Wireless organizers' statement announcing the festival's cancellation:
> The Home Office has withdrawn YE's ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders.

> As with every Wireless Festival, multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking YE and no concerns were highlighted at the time.

> Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had. As YE said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.
