After months of anticipation, the 2026 Grammy for Album of the Year was awarded Sunday (Feb. 1) to Bad Bunny for Debí Tirar Más Fotos. He used his acceptance speech to honor his roots and send a message of strength to those with similar experiences.
Following the announcement by presenter Harry Styles, the Puerto Rican superstar paused to compose himself, visibly emotional before approaching the stage. Accepting the award, Benito delivered an emotional speech, primarily in Spanish, dedicating the award "to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams."
In Spanish, he declared, “Puerto Rico, I told you: We are much bigger than 100 by 35 [miles], and there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”
He continued, “Thank God, thank you to the academy, thank you to the people who have believed in me throughout my entire career. To everyone who worked on this album. Thank you, Mom, for giving birth to me in Puerto Rico. I love you … To all the people who have lost a loved one and have still moved forward with strength, with so much love, this is for you.”
This wasn't Bunny's only win of the night. The artist, slated to headline the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show, also secured Best Música Urbana Album for DTMF and Best Global Music Performance for “EOO.” He entered the ceremony with six nominations, tying for third-most overall.
Bunny’s win with a fully Spanish-language album arrives at a crucial moment in American politics concerning the Latin American community. His Super Bowl performance announcement in September sparked backlash, with Turning Point USA proposing an "anything in English" alternative. Immigrant communities have also faced targeting by ICE, intensifying after incidents in Minnesota.
Earlier in the night, upon accepting Best Música Urbana Album, Bunny addressed the issue directly: “Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say: ‘ICE out!’ We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we are not aliens, we are humans, and we are Americans … The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love.”
The Album of the Year category was highly competitive, with Benito beating out Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, Clipse, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Leon Thomas, and Tyler, the Creator. This marks Bunny’s seventh Grammy win, adding to his previous victories in Best Música Urbana Album and Best Latin Pop or Urban Album.
This win mirrors Bunny’s chart success. Debi Tirar Mas Fotos topped the Billboard 200 for a month, and “DTMF” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Grammys, hosted by Trevor Noah at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, saw Kendrick Lamar leading with nine nominations, followed by Lady Gaga, Jack Antonoff, and Cirkut with seven each.
