Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show Breaks Global Viewership Records, Despite Controversy

Bad Bunny's highly discussed Super Bowl halftime show has officially been crowned the most-watched of all time, marking a significant milestone for Latin music on a global stage.

The Puerto Rican superstar made history last month as the first Latin male artist and the first artist performing primarily in Spanish to headline the prestigious event, delivering a set that celebrated the rich tapestry of Latin music styles.

The performance featured guest appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, while Pedro Pascal, Cardi B, Jessica Alba, and Karol G were among the celebrities spotted dancing in the crowd.

While it was previously reported that the set garnered 128.2 million views in the US alone, ranking fourth in Super Bowl history behind Michael Jackson (1993), Usher (2024), and Kendrick Lamar (2023), Roc Nation, the show's co-producer, has now announced that it achieved a record-breaking 4.157 billion worldwide views within the first 24 hours. This figure encompasses US and international broadcasts, YouTube streams, and other digital platforms.

However, Bad Bunny's Super Bowl appearance wasn't without its share of controversy. The announcement of his headlining slot in September sparked criticism, particularly from the MAGA movement. Donald Trump himself labeled the decision "crazy" and claimed to have "never heard" of the artist.

Adding fuel to the fire, one of Trump’s advisors suggested that ICE would be present at the performance, a particularly sensitive issue given Bad Bunny's previous announcement that he would refrain from touring the US due to concerns about ICE raids. Turning Point USA even staged an 'All American Halftime Show' featuring Kid Rock as a counter-event.

Despite the opposition, Bad Bunny used his platform to deliver a powerful message of unity, stating “God bless America” before listing the nations of Central, South and North America as dancers carried their flags.

A billboard during the performance displayed the message: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love,” and he concluded the segment holding a football emblazoned with the words: “Together, We Are America.”

Post-show polls indicated that more Americans felt Bad Bunny “better represents” the country than Trump, further highlighting the cultural impact of his performance. Trump responded by criticizing the halftime show as a “slap in the face” for America.

Despite the backlash, Bad Bunny received widespread praise from fellow artists, including Rosalía, Doechii, and Jennifer Lopez. Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves also subtly mocked Kid Rock's competing halftime show.

Following an investigation prompted by Republican congressmen, it was confirmed that Bad Bunny's performance did not violate any broadcast decency standards.

The performance also triggered a surge in travel interest to Puerto Rico, with Expedia reporting a remarkable 245 percent increase in flight searches to the island in the days following the halftime show.
