The ever-evolving soundscape of Bonobo is set to expand once more with the announcement of Distance in Static, the latest full-length offering from Simon Green. Slated for a September 11 release on the esteemed Ninja Tune label, this album marks a significant return, building on the atmospheric depth of 2022's Fragments.
Leading the charge is "Me and You," a track that has already become a staple in his recent DJ sets, hinting at the album's dynamic energy. Distance in Static is poised to be a collaborative triumph, boasting an eclectic lineup of vocalists.
The album features the ethereal stylings of Arooj Aftab, the soulful voice of Joy Crookes, the distinctive timbre of Nilüfer Yanya, and the delicate artistry of Ichiko Aoba. Also contributing are Nicole Miglis of Hundred Waters, Aanya Martin, and Kanako Yamamoto, promising a diverse vocal palette across its 14 tracks.
Green offered insight into the album's evocative title, stating, “I think the front end of what I’ve done has now become something that’s referential to younger people. I liked the idea of listening for a distant signal—trying to find something in the noise.” This sentiment reflects a seasoned artist both acknowledging his legacy and continually pushing towards new sonic horizons.
Since Fragments, Bonobo has remained creatively active, notably contributing to the soundtrack for the anime series Lazarus alongside fellow innovators Kamasi Washington and Floating Points, further solidifying his diverse musical reach.
