Charli XCX Addresses Controversy After Berlin Party Linked to Pro-Putin Russian Figure

Two different Charli XCX-related movies are currently in theaters. She recently released her album Wuthering Heights, the soundtrack for the film of the same title, and is promoting her Brat mockumentary, The Moment, across Europe.

While promoting The Moment in Berlin, Charli sparked controversy by attending an afterparty reportedly organized by a Russian woman with ties to the Putin regime and the invasion of Ukraine.

The government-run Ukrainian news platform United24 detailed the situation, stating that Charli XCX attended the Berlin premiere of The Moment, followed by an afterparty organized by Anastasia Shevtsova, also known as Petit, a Russian model and DJ. The party included several high-profile DJs, including Charli's husband, The 1975 drummer George Daniel.

According to United24, Petit is the daughter of Zhanna Shevtsova, founder of Traditsiya, a Putin-aligned Russian NGO active in occupied Ukraine. Petit allegedly traveled to occupied Ukrainian cities like Luhansk and Mariupol in 2024, organizing screenings of the propaganda film Road To A Dream for Ukrainian children. United24 also reports that Russian Report acquired the rights to distribute The Moment in Russia, with plans for an April theatrical release. The full United24 report is available here.

News of Charli XCX's attendance at Petit's party led to criticism on social media:

just found out that charli xcx is partying with russians who actively contribute to war in ukraine. there’s also rumours of her airing her movie in russia, which will obviously fund the war. i urge you guys to not support her or at least be wary of what she does.. pic.twitter.com/zNqvtRsl9g — kweenbimb ?? ?? Children deserve freedom and the right to live with their families. Nothing and no one can justify taking that away!

Charli addressed the controversy on her Instagram story:

>For clarity, neither me nor my team were aware of any of the alleged affiliations around the party in Berlin.
>
>I would like to take this opportunity to say I stand against the atrocities committed by the Russian government in Ukraine and I stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Notably, the Berlin screening of The Moment coincided with the Berlin International Film Festival, which faced criticism for its silence on global conflicts, including the situation in Gaza. Actors were frequently questioned about their political views during press conferences. Rupert Grint, known for his role as Ron Weasley, went viral for his evasive response when asked about the rise of fascism in the UK.

In a separate press conference, Charli XCX praised the festival for addressing political films, stating, "I'm very thankful for this festival because I think it's very, very important that it exists." Her comments were in response to a question about The Moment's screening at various film festivals, not specifically about Ukraine or Palestine.
