Conan O'Brien Devastated by Rob and Michele Reiner's Tragic Death: 'I Was in Shock'
Conan O'Brien expresses his grief and shock following the death of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, after attending O'Brien's holiday party.

Conan O’Brien has spoken out about the profound impact of Rob and Michele Reiner’s death, describing his shock after learning of the tragedy, which occurred shortly after he saw the couple at his holiday party on December 13, 2025.
Rob Reiner, the acclaimed filmmaker known for iconic movies such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men, and his wife, 70-year-old photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found murdered in their Los Angeles home on December 14.
In a recent profile by The New Yorker, O’Brien shared his close friendship with the couple and his disbelief upon hearing the news. "I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot," he said.
"My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so — they were just such lovely people. And to have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone… I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward."
"I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just very – it’s so awful. It’s just so awful.”
Prior to their deaths, Rob and Michele attended O’Brien’s holiday gathering. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Reiners' son, Nick, also attended and reportedly had a verbal altercation with Bill Hader, leading to the family's departure. The couple was discovered dead the following day.
O’Brien added, “And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there — and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend.”
Following the discovery of their bodies, their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with “special circumstances.” These charges could result in a life sentence or the death penalty under California law.
Their death certificates revealed that the cause of death was “multiple sharp force injuries,” classified as a “homicide” committed “with knife, by another.”
Tributes poured in for Reiner from prominent figures such as Jack Black, Jane Fonda, Stephen King, Barack and Michelle Obama, Paul McCartney, and Meg Ryan, all expressing their condolences and admiration for the late filmmaker.
